Weiser Power Bolt Review

The Weiser Power Bolt electronic deadbolt lock has been available for many years and recently the design has changed from the original one. Instead of the original standard pin-tumbler type brass lock cylinder, Weiser is now supplying these electronic deadbolt locks with their SmartKey lock cylinders.

The SmartKey lock cylinders are made from cast metal which fatigues and breaks very easily. The broken cast metal usually falls into the lock and stops the key from working, causing a lockout situation. Aside from this problem it is a fairly good design.

If you decide to purchase one of these locks and put it on your door there are several things that you should be aware of. To begin with, it all depends on how your door was prepared with the holes bored through the door facings. it is our expert experience that this type of lockset will only mount onto a door that has a facing bore of 2-1/8 inches in diameter. It will not fit with any other size of hole.

This electronic lock requires 4 AA batteries in order to have it function. It would be a good idea to include buying the batteries at the same time as you buy the lock. Humans are lazy and get accustomed to not needing to carry their key because of the electronic lock. Batteries don’t last forever and the very best advice we can offer you here is to change your batteries twice a year at the same time you change the batteries and you will never be locked out. It might be a good idea to also carry your key with you in the event of the batteries going weak you can still enter your home. This will save you from having to call a locksmith to get your door open for you.

Aside from the SmartKey cast metal lock cylinder, this is a very well designed and reliable electronic deadbolt lock. SmartKey is supposed to be an advanced technology that Weiser came up with to allow the end user to rekey their own lock without the aid of a professional locksmith. In all honesty, their original brass pin-tumbler lock cylinder was much more reliable and durable.

There are other electronic deadbolts made by different companies that are just as feature rich as the Weiser PowerBolt that employ a standard brass pin tumbler lock cylinder instead of a Smart Key type lock cylinder. Those manufacturers using the standard pin tumbler type lock cylinder would be our first choice in electronic deadbolt locks.

A lock manufacturing company called Gatehouse manufactures a residential single cylinder motorized electronic deadbolt lock that has a standard brass pin tumbler lock cylinder and can be mounted on doors that have holes bored through the door facings of 1-1/2 inches to 2-1/8 inches in diameter. In our opinion, Weiser should have gone further in the redesign of their PowerBolt to include being able to fit into a door bore that is smaller than 2-1/8 inches in diameter. The average homeowner who wants one of this type of lock is not prepared to enlarge the holes in their door to accept this lockset. The alternative is obviously to go with the company’s design that will fit into the holes you already have in your door.
